Doughnut Theory
The Inside is a Lie.
Recently in unfortunate news out of Alabama, an airport worker was ingested into an Embraer 170 plane engine.
When we ingest food, much like this story, we imagine it as the food is going inside of us. I want to suggest an alternative. The food, from a simplified understanding, always remains on the outside of us.
Imagine the human person as a tall doughnut.
From our mouths to the the other end, that entire system of tubes is like the center hole of a doughnut. It is not the food going inside of us, but rather going through the hole of the doughnut where our agents of mechanical and chemical breakdown extra what we want, replace it with what we do not, and kick it out the other end.
