CO2
Am I The Problem?
I am concerned in the long term health of planet earth. My largest concern relates to PFAS and plastic in our oceans and ultimately in us. But moving away from these issues which I hope to cover in the future, I want to look at Carbon Dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gas emissions.
While clearly the issue relates to entities much larger than me I would prefer to not be a part of the problem if I can avoid it or at least support work towards the solution.
In 2023 as my New Years resolution I would like to go about accurately calculating the total related emissions (Scope 3) with the goal of, on an ongoing basis, funding carbon removal up to that amount.
My list of priorities would be:
- Use and buy less
- Be conscientious of travel, the leading cause of emissions
- If buying make sure everything is high quality to last longer
- And; avoid anything that has planned obsolescence built into it such as reliance on batteries that will fail over next few years without replacement.
- Funding carbon removal to the degree I did add to total emissions.
I also have been learning more about the offset and credit market which I am coming to believe more and more is foolish optimism at best. All carbon paradigms which I support would have to be in the goal of a more permanent carbon sequestration. For example the California tree carbon sequestration project I once supported burned to the ground which is far from what I hoped for.
If anyone has thought about this deeply and would like to share please email me on the email listed on my website.
